• Ericsson and Grenzebach announce cooperation to boost the future of the logistics industry
• Mobile network supplier Ericsson supports Grenzebach customers in building a 5G company network
• First project for a renowned OEM is currently in the planning
HAMLAR, DUSSELDORF/Germany. Strong partnership – the internationally active automation specialist Grenzebach and the Swedish mobile network supplier Ericsson work closely together to provide logistics with high-performance, private 5G campus networks and 5G-capable automated guided vehicles (AGV). “Ericsson and Grenzebach have an affinity for technology. We both aim to establish 5G as a technology in the industry, including monitoring and controlling automated guided vehicles,” Ralf Wellens, Project Manager 5G for Industries at Ericsson, says. The first joint project for a renowned German OEM is already in the set-up phase. The aim is to increase its productivity permanently. Ericsson will supply the private 5G campus network, Grenzebach the universal control system, and the AGV.
Grenzebach ready for the 5G future
The desire to further advance 5G in the industry and enable companies to implement 5G has brought together the experts from Ericsson and Grenzebach. In the Ericsson Eurolab, the first component tests were conducted at the end of 2022. Afterward, the experts from both companies successfully connected the Grenzebach AGVs and a 5G network from Ericsson under natural conditions in the “365 Days of Grenzebach World”.
The various possible applications and their mobility make autonomous vehicles the ideal choice for a 5G application in Industry 4.0. Grenzebach thus started equipping their vehicles with 5G clients and the corresponding antennas at an early stage. Philipp Marb, Head of Product Management and R&D Intralogistics at Grenzebach, adds: “Today, it is a choice option for our automated guided vehicles, similar to the options when buying a car. Thus, we enable our customers to test the 5G technology in the early phase and use it in natural operations.”
5G and Industry 4.0
5G is the fifth generation of mobile communications, substantially expanding the performance of today’s mobile networks to meet the future needs of industry (campus networks) and private users. This technology has many special features which are essential for Industry 4.0 and its increasingly flexible and complex production processes. 5G enables faster data throughput rates and more network capacities. It also promises high availability and provides fast response times between devices thanks to extremely low latency.
